The Kaiser Chiefs need no introduction, they have become one of the great British cult bands of the music scene. Always bringing their high octane brand of indie rock and new wave to countless fans over the last two decades, since their re invention from Parva to the Kaiser Chiefs, a South African football team for those not familiar with the origins of the slightly alternative name.
Their reputation does indeed precede them, with fan bases stretching across the generations as evidenced by those in attendance tonight. A mass following for this concert at Bristol Sounds, the second of five nights for the festival this year. Yet Kaiser Chiefs are no strangers to the big event and have headlined countless gigs and festivals in the West Country.
Bristol Sounds has become the flagship of Bristol summer festivals and Kaiser Chiefs were in their element. Ricky Wilson is the showman in chief and comes front of stage to reach out to the crowds declaring “We are the world famous Kaiser Chiefs!”. Then the light show begins as Ricky and the band perform the hits from the albums opening with ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’.
The accolades are impressive, with eight studio albums, including the recent Easy Eighth Album, yet tonight is to mark 20 years of ‘Employment’ their debut album, so they race through the many hits that contained including “I Predict a Riot” and “Modern Way” and of course the rabble rousing sing along that is ‘Oh My God’ all the while Ricky Wilson keep the crowd in the palm of his hand.
Once they exhausted the songs on ‘Employment’ they do the time honoured, walk on stage and come back two minutes later for a few more hits from some of their seven other studio albums. The encore opening with a cover from another band that mastered the 3 minutes pop punk song ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’. Despite what they try and claim we all know that ‘Ruby’ is a Wurzels classic now, but we’ll let them have it back just for tonight.
It's finally all brought to a close with ‘The Angry Mob’ fortunately the Bristolians don’t seem too angry tonight and we all leave content after another wonderful performance by The Kaiser Chiefs. Keeping Bristol Sounds well and truly on track for 2025, who’s joining us back here tomorrow for Texas.
